Bears are the largest carnivores in North America. Though heavily built, they can run fast and are agile climbers. Bears are shy, solitary animals that usually avoid human contact. Bears can be attracted to food and garbage, which may bring about their demise: “A Fed Bear is a Dead Bear” as the saying goes.
Black Bears are typically black with a brownish muzzle. There are several other colour variants, including brown, cinnamon, and the rare white Kermode or “Spirit” Bear, found only in the Kermode Islands off the Pacific Coast. Black Bears occur in heavily forested areas, but have become well adapted to living near human habitation.
The state of Alaska has a high proportion of Grizzly Bears, which are restricted to northwestern North America. Grizzlies have a distinctive hump on their backs. They can be very aggressive if surprised at close range.
Polar Bears are denizens of the arctic ice, and have a long neck and large, powerful body. They are well adapted to their environment, with a thick layer of fat, and a dense cream-coloured fur coat. These bears are increasingly threatened by global warming. Polar Bears can been seen through tours out of Churchill, Manitoba, in Canada.
Pictures of bears, photographed here, capture the beauty of these animals at home in the wilderness.
