Surrounded by coulees, buttes and cliffs, this is one of the few ranches in the Big Muddy Badlands in Southern Saskatchewan, Canada which is still operating on a daily basis. The Big Muddy Badlands was once filled with ranches as the landscape was ideal for this type of lifestyle, but one would never know when an outlaw might be hiding out nearby ready to steal the horses.
One of the first and largest ranches operating in the Big Muddy Badlands was owned by a retired Northwest Mounted Police sergeant. This was the onset to other ranches and when learning of the history of the Big Muddy Badlands, the sergeant's name is one which is remembered.
Today, the rolling hills in the Badlands are still seen with cattle grazing upon them along with other types of wildlife roaming free in Southern Saskatchewan. One of the best ranches to visit while touring the Big Muddy Badlands is the Burgess Ranch where visitors can enjoy a meal and learn the history of the valley and the ranches.
