The Burritt's Lock along the Rideau Canal in Merrickville, Ontario was built to bypass the rapids with a dam that is located at the head of the rapids which helps in the navigation process above the lock. The Burritt's Lock on the Rideau Canal used a natural flood channel making the situation of an alternate route fairly easy.
