The sunset lighting reflects off Castle Butte in the Big Muddy Badlands in Southern Saskatchewan, Canada and prominently displays the patterns and formations engraved into the hard clay and sandstone surface. Over the years, many different weather systems have moved in across the Big Muddy Badlands, altering the patterns and formations in Castle Butte.
This geological landmark originated during the Ice Age approximately 10,000 years ago and once marked a destination point for many settlers, Indians, outlaws and police. The landscape of the Big Muddy Badlands was created by the melt waters of glaciers and today the greenery flourishes across the entire area.
From the base of Castle Butte, visitors can examine the unique patterns and formations while taking in a stunning prairie sunset with this one decorating the sky in bright yellow hues and interesting cloud patterns. Many attempt to hike to the top of Castle Butte, making the sunsets even more extravagant.
