Partially shaded by lush, green trees, the historic building built in 1895, houses the Dalnavert Museum, also known as the Sir Hugh John Macdonald House which is highlighted by the summer sun. The Dalnavert Museum is a perfect example of the late Victorian era in Winnipeg City with the architecture displaying the beauty of the Queen Anne Revival and is designated as a national and provincial historic site.
Once home to Sir Hugh John Macdonald, a lawyer, Premier of Manitoba, Police Magistrate for Winnipeg as well as being the son of Canada's first Prime Minister, the historic house has been fully restored. Inside, visitors will find exhibits, interpretation areas relating to the building and a collection of items found in the museum. Stained glass windows, a wrap around veranda, a gabled roof line and decorative brick adorn the exterior of the Dalnavert Museum while the interior is decorated in rich wood paneling, elegant wallpaper and luxurious furnishings suitable for a upper Victorian class home.
Located in the downtown core of Winnipeg City, the Dalnavert Museum is open year round with activities, tours and school programs available. A historical building which was saved from destruction between 1970 and 1974 by the Manitoba Historical Society has attracted thousands of people and has become a very popular tourist attraction for many while visiting Manitoba, Canada.
