An interpretive sign on the viewing deck at the Light station on Flowerpot Island in the Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario, Canada allows visitors to learn the history of the area. From the Light station, visitors can enjoy the scenery around Flowerpot Island as the shallow waters below show off their unique coloring.
In 1897, a navigation light which was visible for 14 miles, was placed on Flowerpot Island to help vessels through the reefs and islands of the Tobermory Archipelago. After being burnt and thrown off the cliff in 1969 along with the destruction of a fog plant, a steel light tower was constructed on Flowerpot Island. The light station, the interpretive sign and the viewing deck are now located where the original fog building once looked out over these waters.
Renovations are constantly being done around the light station in Fathom Five National Marine Park so visitors can enjoy the beauty of Flowerpot Island for years to come. Near the interpretive sign, people can also visit the lightkeeper's home, stop for a refreshment and snack or talk to the volunteer lightkeepers for more information on the history of Flowerpot Island.
