Fort Walsh North West Mounted Police Saskatchewan Canada


A costumed interpreter dressed as a North West Mounted Police stands besides a Red River cart at the Fort Walsh National Historic Site in Saskatchewan, Canada.

An employee at the Fort Walsh National Historic Site in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park in Saskatchewan, Canada dressed in period styled clothing from the North West Mounted Police during the 19th century. Beside this costumed interpreter, is a Red River cart with its large spoked wheels which carried hundreds of pounds at one time.

Fort Walsh was first established in 1875 when it was run by Inspector James Walsh, hence the name, and then becoming the headquarters for the North West Mounted Police in 1878 until 1883 when it was abandoned. It was later re-opened in 1942 as a ranch to breed and raises horses for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and in 1968, Parks Canada took ownership and deemed this a national historic site which has become a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Saskatchewan.
