Nova Scotia is situated on a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Breton, a large island, occupies the northern section of the province. The Chignecto Isthmus connects Nova Scotia to the province of New Brunswick to the west. Nova Scotia is the second smallest of Canada’s provinces, but has the largest population of the Atlantic Provinces.

Highlights of Cape Breton include Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Cabot Trail, a scenic drive that follows the rugged coastline. Tours of Bras d’Or, a large lake, can be accessed from the town of Baddeck. Also in Cape Breton is the National Historic Site of Louisburg, where one can step back in time to experience colonial life in the 18th century. ...

On the province’s mainland, a visit to the capital city of Halifax is a must. The Citadel, now a National Historic Site, is a series of impressive fortifications designed to protect the city. There is much to see and do in Halifax, whether it be touring Halifax Harbour, Pier 21, or taking a stroll through the Halifax Public Gardens. Be sure to include a trip to Peggy’s Cove, to see the most famous lighthouse in Canada.

One of the province’s most popular destinations is the historic town of Lunenburg. Built by the British in 1753, Lunenburg was a colonial city with German, Swiss and French inhabitants. Visitors today can experience the historic architecture and maritime way of life through historic re-enactments. Another National Historic Site, Port-Royal features a reconstructed settlement of French colonists dating from the early 17th century.

In addition to its rich history, Nova Scotia is a place of great natural beauty. Visitors may wish to explore the coastline along the Bay of Fundy, exploring fossils, rock formations, vistas and more. Kejimkujik National Park, situated inland, has lakes and rivers that are ideal for canoeists.

Tour these photographs of Nova Scotia, and you will wish to see its nature, historic sites and dramatic coastlines first hand.
