The sand dunes at the Great Sand Hills near Sceptre, Saskatchewan show off their unique patterns which are constantly change with the wind that sweeps across the landscape. Surrounded by lush greenery, some of the sand dunes can be approximately 160 yards in length and rise to heights of between 35 and 40 feet high.
Small channels and valleys are formed as the shifting sand erodes away at certain areas more than others. One can see how the patterns in the sand follow the direction from which the wind came.
The sand making up the dunes at the Great Sand Hills is very soft and many visitors remove their shoes and socks while walking. Others enjoy the excitement of starting from the top and sledding down, some who bring their "magic carpets" to increase their momentum.
Sceptre, Saskatchewan, a small village with a population of about 100, is approximately 10 kilometers from the Great Sand Hills. This region is one of Saskatchewan's ecological treasures and has become a very popular tourist attraction over the years.
