A statue of Jon Sigurdsson stands on the grounds of the Legislative Building in the City of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada with the base being surrounded in bright blossoming flowers. Jon Sigurdsson was a leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement who was born in 1811 in the Westfjords of Iceland.
His knowledge of Icelandic history flourished when he worked at the Arnamagnaean Collection in Denmark leading him forward into discussions of old Icelandic parliament in 1843 as an advisory body. In 1845, he became elected as the speaker and it was not long after that Iceland had freedom of trade, fishing and agriculture.
When Iceland took control of its finances and legislative power, Jon Sigurdsson was the key player in this movement. He passed on in 1879 and the statue at the Legislative Building in Winnipeg, Manitoba proudly stands in his honor.
