At the center of Canada is the large province of Ontario, which neighbours Manitoba to the west and Quebec to the east. Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario, massive bodies of fresh water known as the Great Lakes, are shared with the United States to the south.

Ontario is home to Canada’s largest city, Toronto, along the banks of Lake Ontario. In Toronto, one can visit landmarks such as the CN tower or Royal Ontario Museum, and enjoy the shopping, nightlife, and culture that the city has to offer. Ottawa is the province’s second largest city and the nation’s capital. Attractions include the Parliament Buildings and the National Gallery.

Traversed by the Canadian Shield and dotted with lakes and rivers, Ontario is full of natural wonders and parks. Niagara Falls, straddling the border between Canada and the U.S., draws millions of tourists, and is second largest waterfall in the world.

Ontario’s provincial parks provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and exploring nature. In Algonquin Provincial Park, one can silently canoe across a lake, or take in the crimson fall colours. Near Thunder Bay, Kakabeka Falls in Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, is known as the “Niagara of the North”. For something different, one can explore a sunken shipwreck at Fathom Five National Marine Park, or stroll along the sandy beaches at Lake Superior Provincial Park. Point Pelee National Park has breathtaking wetlands and some of the best bird watching in the country.

Historic fur trading posts, and the history of first nations peoples are brought to life in re-created outposts such as Fort William, Fort Henry, and the town of Morrisbury.
