The maritime province of Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province. It is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The capital city is Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island, called P.E.I., is known as the “Birthplace of Confederation”. The Charlottetown Conference, held in 1864, eventually led to the creation of Canada in 1867.

The Confederation Bridge, spanning 13 kilometres, connects P.E.I. to New Brunswick across Northumberland Strait. The concrete bridge opened in 1997.

...is best known for the spunky red-headed orphan from Lucy Maud Montgomery's famous novel Anne of Green Gables published in 1908. The Green Gables heritage house in Cavendish is part of a National Historic Site, drawing thousands of tourists every year. 2008 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables.

Anne of Green Gables fans can also visit Montgomery's first home and birthplace in New London, or explore Avonlea village, which re-creates Anne's rural community complete with shops, wagon rides and music. Not to be missed is the Anne of Green Gables musical, performed at Charlottetown's Confederation Center of the Arts.

Fishing, particularly shellfish and lobster, is an important part of P.E.I.'s economy. In villages such as French River and Rustico, one can photograph lobster traps and fishing boats in quiet coves. Picturesque lighthouses can be seen at Covehead, North Rustico and other locations.

P.E.I. is famous for its sandy beaches, sandstone cliffs, and rich red soil. P.E.I. provides about one-third of Canada's potato crop and agriculture continues to be a main industry on the island.

Prince Edward Island is a photographer's dream, and there are endless opportunities to take pictures of the province's scenic beauty and heritage.
