The aerial scenery of the Porphyry Point Lighthouse at the entrance to Black Bay on Lake Superior near Thunder Bay, Ontario is stunning on a clear day. The red rooftops glisten in the sunlight and one can easily identify where the drop offs are in Lake Superior especially around the island on which the lighthouse sits.
The tower of the Porphyry Point Lighthouse is 48 feet in height with the first one being established in 1873 in a square wooden building. The current lighthouse was built in 1960 and is an iron skeletal tower with white slatwork daymark. The lighthouse is still active to aid mariners around the rugged shores of Lake Superior and flashes every 10 seconds.
The lighthouse is not open to the public and can only be seen from the water or while capturing an aerial view while soaring overhead. Since becoming automated in 1979, the island was deserted and has become a nature preserve owned by the Canadian Coast Guard.
