There is so much history to absorb in this fascinating province whether visiting cities such as Montreal, the second largest city in Canada (Toronto is the largest) or the Gaspe Peninsula.
The Province of Quebec is so large, in fact it is the largest province in Canada, that there are many biomes within it's boundaries - tundra, temperate forests, and taiga (the boreal forest) as well as the coastal areas. There are big fish and little fish plus marine mammals, land mammals and birds - pike, yellow perch, Atlantic white sided dolphin, porpoise, beluga, minke, blue and humpback whales. Other animals include herons, ducks, elk, deer, raccoon and beaver and on and on. One of the most breathtaking sights is miles of the maple and yellow birch trees in the autumn. The maple trees are grown for the delicious maple syrup they produce, but the fall spectacle is a syrup for the soul.
One area of Quebec which should not be missed is the Gaspe Peninsula, because it was here in the Bay of Gaspe, on July 24th 1534, where Jacques Cartier landed, and possessed the land in the name of Francois I of France. He erected a wooden cross bearing the royal coat of arms and the words 'Vive le Roi de France'.
This was during Cartier's first voyage to the New World. The Musee de la Gaspesie in Gaspe is an excellent source of information. The Gaspesie, the official name of the peninsula, is part of the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River which continues into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. In the middle 17th century settlers moved to Gaspe and made a living fishing. In Parc de la Gaspesie are the Chic-Choc Mountains, which are part of the Appalachian Mountains, and run along the centre of the peninsula. These are ancient mountains and have steep sides, but flat tops, Mont Jacques Cartier at 4,160 feet is the highest, The Gaspesie scenery is spectacular and the life is simple. Forillon National Park, opened in 1970, covers 244 square kilometres jutting into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence where the wild natural beauty of Gaspe, Quebec can be appreciated.
The Province of Quebec is indeed 'La Belle Provence'.
