The small town of Flat Rock located along the Killick Coast Scenic Route on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada is a fishing community dating back as far as 1689. One of the main tourist attractions in the town is the "Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto", a shrine which was blessed by Pope John Paull II in 1984. East of Montreal, Canada, this is known to be the largest religious shrine.
The grotto was built by a group of volunteer labourers with its completion being in 1958. As part of the Pope's papal visit to Newfoundland, Canada, the people of the community were thrilled when this religious shrine was blessed.
The name "Our Lady of Lourdes" originated as it refers to the Marian apparitions that are said to have appeared before various individuals at different times around Lourdes, France. This Catholic shrine lives on in the town of Flat Rock and many visitors find the "Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto" a very impressive sight while passing through this area.
