Fields of golden wheat and picturesque grain elevators are popular images of this land-locked prairie province that is bordered by Alberta to the west and Manitoba to the east. Saskatchewan supplies 45% of Canada’s grain, but agriculture is only one aspect of the province’s varied economy. Cattle ranching, mining, forestry, oil and natural gas and uranium production are also significant industries.
Saskatchewan’s largest city is bustling Saskatoon, followed by the province’s capital city Regina. Regina is home to the only training academy in Canada for the RCMP, or Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Over a thousand Mounties graduate from Regina each year.
Rich in parkland, Saskatchewan has two national parks and 34 provincial parks. The parks protect prairie grassland, aspen parkland and boreal forest. Grassland National Park has fragile grasslands that are home to prairie dogs and bison. Prince Albert National Park, located 83 km north of the city of Prince Albert, was for many years home to Grey Owl, Saskatchewan’s famed naturalist and writer.
Boreal forest, with many lakes and rivers, dominates the northern part of the province. Along the shores of Athabasca Lake, Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park protects the most major northern sand dunes in the world.
In southwest corner of Saskatchewan, popular Cypress Hills Provincial Park has outstanding scenery, and is one of a few places in the province that was not glaciated during the last ice age.
Saskatchewan’s wild places are ideal for fishing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and many other recreational activities like canoeing, kayaking, biking and hiking.
Heritage sites and museums pay homage to Métis and First Nations culture. Métis leaders like Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont, and First Nations Chiefs Poundmaker and Big Bear shaped the province’s history.
Discover this unique prairie province by touring through these photographs of Saskatchewan’s natural and cultural highlights.
