Sweepstakes Shipwreck Remains Fathom Five National Marine Park


Below the surface of the turquoise colored water of Lake Huron, the remains of the Sweepstakes shipwreck is easily viewed in Big Tub Harbour in Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario, Canada.

Beautiful homes sit along the shores of Big Tub Harbour in Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario, Canada where the residents can look out over the unique colored water on a daily basis. Sitting below the surface of the water are the remains of a shipwreck called the Sweepstakes which is 1 of 20 or more which have come to rest around the park.

For a closer look at the Sweepstakes, visitors can take a boat tour while others scuba dive amongst the remains. The Sweepstakes was originally built in 1867 and went down in Cove Island in 1885. The shipwreck was towed to Big Tub Harbour where it sunk to the bottom and remains today.

When Lake Huron is at its lowest level, the remains of the shipwreck will rise above the surface, making it easier to view from the shore.
