The ferry transportation system which travels between Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island on Lake Huron, Ontario is a beautiful way to spend a couple of hours and enjoy the scenery. This ferry is named the Chi-Cheemaun and has crossed these waters since 1974, the largest passenger/car vessel able to carry a maximum of 648 passengers and 143 vehicles.
This transportation is only available from May through to October with two or three daily sailings scheduled. Weighing nearly 7,000 tons and 365 feet in length, this ferry makes the 30 mile crossing between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island traveling at approximately 18 miles per hour.
The Bruce Peninsula stretches into the northern parts of Ontario between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay where the quaint fishing village of Tobermory and Manitoulin Island are located. Aboard the Chi-Cheemaun ferry, passengers can enjoy light meals, snacks or refreshments or browse the gift shop for souvenirs. A small playground on board provides entertainment for young children while video games keep the older generation of kids amused.
