The large beacon inside the Walton Lighthouse in the town of Walton, Nova Scotia, overlooks the Minas Basin and visitors can tour through the lighthouse to enjoy the scenery. The Minas Basin is made up of intertidal mud, sand flats, seaweed and rocks at low tide and as the water makes its way back in, it meanders its way around the area creating fascinating patterns across the landscape.
The cliffs around the Minas Basin flourish in greenery during the summer months and visitors can only tour through the Walton Lighthouse to enjoy the scenery as this is an important region which needs to be preserved.
The Walton Lighthouse was constructed in 1873 and stands 60 feet above the Minas Basin where it once helped mariners make their way into the Port of Walton. The shipping industry in this area rapidly declined in the 1970's and the Walton Lighthouse was bought for its heritage.
