On the province’s mainland, a visit to the capital city of Halifax is a must. The Citadel, now a National Historic Site, is a series of impressive fortifications designed to protect the city. There is much to see and do in Halifax, whether it be touring Halifax Harbour, Pier 21, or taking a stroll through the Halifax Public Gardens. Be sure to include a trip to Peggy’s Cove, to see the most famous lighthouse in Canada.

One of the province’s most popular destinations is the historic town of Lunenburg. Built by the British in 1753, Lunenburg was a colonial city with German, Swiss and French inhabitants. Visitors today can experience the historic architecture and maritime way of life through historic re-enactments. Another National Historic Site, Port-Royal features a reconstructed settlement of French colonists dating from the early 17th century.

In addition to its rich history, Nova Scotia is a place of great natural beauty. Visitors may wish to explore the coastline along the Bay of Fundy, exploring fossils, rock formations, vistas and more. Kejimkujik National Park, situated inland, has lakes and rivers that are ideal for canoeists.
